Series of paintings, 2016
Acrylic and acrylic transfer on canvas, 170×150 cm
The series deals with the endless possibilities of a layered image, loss and recovery of earlier points in time. Failed Recovery points to the impossibility of bringing back what is no longer here. At the same time the title refers to the technical term recovery image, which is a digital replicate created in computing to return to a certain prior state in case of a defect.
Czinege applies this idea in the paintings by photographing various stages of the process as ostensible ‘backup copies’, which he transfers on previously painted layers. The technique enables him to retrieve lost parts of an image and bring back earlier stages in time. The accumulating layers form into sediments of time on canvas. They underline the nature of the painting process that constantly shifts between the virtual and the physical.
